Wireless is perhaps the biggest pain point in modern Linux due to lazy card manufacturers (broken drivers and/or firmware) and broken routers (again lazy manufacturers).
As of 2018, what is the preferred option for a good Linux wireless card / antenna?
Atheros AR9271 chipset used to be the preferred option. Even sanctioned by FSF as drivers are in linux-libre, and the favorite of Kali Linux pentesters. However, I’ve been testing several Alfa Network high-gain antennas with this chipset and the driver crashes every few hours.
What are other preferred chipsets and antennas? What options are advisable to run 802.11 ac connections, which AR9271 doesn’t support?
