i got 99 problems and the shell is one:

so when im in the shell sometimes a command kind of locks everything up, now i can still enter commands but i can’t scroll back up to where i was for example /ps aux/elf tend to generate long lists so i can only ever see the bottom 15-20 rows i know about the |more modifier but that seems like a pain to use every single time. P.S. is there an easy way to back out of a directory?
