Difference between disabling IPv6 in GRUB vs sysctl?:

What is the difference between disabling IPv6 in grub vs setting a system tunable? I’ve been squashing IPv6 on all my hosts by adding net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6=1 to a file in /etc/sysctl.d/ but I know a similar effect can be achieved by adding ipv6.disable=1 to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX. Is there any significant difference between these two methods that goes unnoticed by the user? And is one generally preferred over the other?
